In business everything is about goals! - I know when I mention goals you may think – Oh! I’ve heard it all before!!! However, have you ever wondered why you do not achieve some of your goals, for example: why New Year’s resolutions do not work? Have you wondered why you get ‘stuck’ along the way? Well wonder no more! Enjoy using the tips here to help you move forward on your road to success.
Goals
Yes, in order to be successful in business (and life), you need to set a long term goal and then, short term goals aimed at moving towards that goal.
There are many goals setting systems, for example,
WOOP (https://woopmylife.org).
SMART (https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/smart-goals.htm#:~:text=How%20to%20Use%20SMART.%201%201.%20Specific.%20Your,Achievable.%204%204.%20Relevant.%205%205.%20Time-bound.%20).
It does not matter which one you use as long as it works for you. However, to succeed, a goal needs to be realistic, achievable, time set, and for you to know when you have achieved it.
Accountability
Why do a lot of business development Facebook groups ask in their posts -
What goals are you setting this week?
What have you achieved this week?
Here accountability is the key, having to be accountable to someone else helps to motivate you and helps you focus on achieving success. Otherwise, you can get lost in the ‘to do’ list, find yourself overwhelmed, procrastinating, never achieving your desired outcome and burning out in the process! – sound familiar?
So, you may ask, I am setting goals and I have accountability, so why do I get ‘stuck’ or why am I not always achieving my goals? ........Well, the unconscious mind can get in the way!
The unconscious mind
We use the conscious mind to help us decide on and set our goals. However, did you know that the conscious mind only uses 3-5% of our brain capacity? This means that a huge 95% -97% of what we do, think and feel is run by the unconscious mind!
It’s common knowledge that the unconscious mind runs our bodily systems, like our breathing, heart rate, and body temperature, etc. However, what most people do not know is that the unconscious mind also filters everything we see, hear and feel, and makes decisions on the basis of our culture, experience, beliefs and values.
We have about 11 million bits of information coming at us, per second; the unconscious mind reduces this to 5-7 bits per second as this is all our conscious mind can cope with. - What this means is that you need your unconscious mind on board to help you achieve success and ensure you do not get ‘stuck’ in the process. However, remember no one is perfect, we all have issues to overcome on our journeys road to success.
So, when setting goals you need to ensure the unconscious mind is in agreement with what your conscious mind has decided you want.
It’s that simple, if your goal is not aligned with what the unconscious mind thinks you need, it will work against you achieving it! Hmm! This is one reason why New Year Resolutions do not usually work!
So, once your goal is set and clearly defined (as described above), you need to check if the unconscious mind is on board, there are various ways to do this, a couple include:
1. Quickly ask yourself the following ‘confusing’ sentences, then record the first thing that pop into your head – do not overthink it! The answer may give you an indication if your goal is on the right track.
What will happen if you get it?
What won’t happen if you get it?
What will happen if you don’t get it?
What won’t happen if you don’t get it?
2. Close your eyes and imagine you have achieved your goal. Imagine yourself looking through your own eyes, see what you see, hear what you hear and feel what you’d feel once you’ve achieved that dream. If it feels at all uncomfortable, clarify or tweak your goal, and try again.
The Road to Success
I liken the road to success to the picture (below) that my uncle John Coulsting painted many years ago, that is still hung on my wall. It’s a picture of a forest, with trees edging a long path that has light at the forest end.

Along the trail there are light patches, with sun glinting on the autumn colours, you could imagine hearing the birds and feeling the breeze through your hair. Then there are darker patches, where the colours have been lost to the density, you could imagine there being no sound, just feeling the humidity in the air and your feet crunching the autumn leaves.
In places along the route there are gaps where the trees are missing, leading to lovely bright sun filled areas or shadows and here you could get lead astray. Once back on the path it leads you forward to the light at the boundary of the forest, where your dreams await.
Sound familiar?
The road to success is not always easy and can be downright challenging at times. Life can be full of ups and downs, you can fall into bad habits, feel ‘stuck’ or something happens and you can get waylaid at times….. However, give yourself permission for this to be OK, and part of the process towards your goals. Remember the keys to success are:
· Set goals – keep re-evaluating them and moving forwards towards these goals
· Awareness - the main thing is becoming aware when you get ‘stuck’ or things are not moving smoothly mindset wise.
· Be kind to yourself, get some ‘me time’.
· Tips and techniques – learning tips and techniques to help you get out of the ‘stuck’ place.
· Mindset support - knowing when to ask for help with your mindset to enable you to continue moving forward.
Does this resonate with you? If your mindset is holding you back from achieving what you want in your business and life:

My road to success
For me the road to success gives me a sense of purpose and permission, knowing that it’s ok to have ups and down, as long as I have my goal, awareness of my process and progress, tips and techniques to help me and mindset support when I need it. I can then keep coming back to the path in the forest, and continue towards my dream goal. I find this awareness invaluable, because it helps my mind monkeys from beating me up when something does not go as I planned.
